Luxi Black Polishing Compound - TP2506

LUXI® Black Polishing Compound is the second most aggressive compound in the LUXI range, designed for a strong first-stage polish on hard and difficult metals. It provides high material removal while offering greater control than the maximum-cutting LUXI Asian Blue.

LUXI Black is particularly suited to platinum, titanium, stainless steel and other hard and difficult metals. It can also be used on bronze, brass and silver, particularly on large, flat and open surfaces where a less aggressive compound does not provide sufficient cutting action.

With a Cut rating of 9 and Gloss rating of 5, LUXI Black is designed to remove the visible marks left by the final abrasive preparation, refine the surface and prepare the workpiece for subsequent polishing with a finer LUXI compound. For best results, LUXI recommends preparing the surface to at least P400, with P600 or finer preferred, depending on the material, surface condition and required finish. For platinum, preparation to approximately P800–P1000 is often recommended.

LUXI Black can be used with Split-lap wheels, hard felt wheels, sisal wheels, hard stitched cotton wheels and bristle brushes, allowing the compound to be adapted to different surfaces and geometries. Sisal provides the most aggressive action, while hard stitched cotton offers strong cutting with a softer contact character. Bristle brushes are particularly useful for recesses and complex relief that conventional polishing wheels cannot easily reach.

Apply the compound sparingly to a clean polishing tool and work in short passes, regularly inspecting the surface. Avoid excessive pressure or overloading the wheel with compound. Once the first polishing stage is complete, remove any remaining compound and metal residue before progressing to a finer LUXI compound. Use a separate clean wheel or tool for the following stage to prevent contamination from the coarser Black compound.

LUXI Formulation

LUXI compounds are water-based, silica-free and animal-fat-free, offering a modern alternative to traditional polishing compounds.

The silica-free formulation contains no crystalline silica, avoiding the specific respiratory hazards associated with inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust. Appropriate dust extraction and personal protective equipment should always be used during polishing, but the absence of crystalline silica is an important consideration when choosing a polishing compound.

The animal-fat-free formulation uses a water-soluble binder rather than traditional animal fats. This helps create a cleaner polishing process, with residues that are easier to remove from the workpiece, polishing wheels and equipment. The water-based formulation also helps reduce the greasy residue often associated with traditional fat-based compounds.

Together, these properties make LUXI a cleaner, modern alternative to traditional polishing compounds, combining easier cleanup and a more considered formulation with the high-performance cutting and polishing characteristics required for professional jewellery and metalworking applications.
