LUXI® Gray Polishing Compound is the third most aggressive compound in the LUXI range, designed for a powerful and controlled first-stage polish on platinum, titanium, stainless steel, hard white-gold alloys and large, flat or open gold surfaces.

LUXI Gray is intended for situations where a softer compound such as LUXI Blue or Yellow does not provide sufficient cutting action, but the greater material removal of LUXI Black or Asian Blue is unnecessary. On a correctly prepared surface, Gray removes the visible marks left by the final abrasive, refines the surface and helps preserve sharp edges, relief and intended geometry before moving to a finer polishing compound.

With a Cut rating of 8 and Gloss rating of 6, LUXI Gray provides a strong first-stage cutting action while maintaining a controlled working finish. Before polishing, complete all required shaping, repairs and abrasive preparation. P400 is the general minimum starting point, with P600 or finer preferred, depending on the material, surface condition, shape and required result. Stainless steel generally requires finer preparation, with P1000–P1200 as a starting point and P1500 or finer sometimes required for large, smooth surfaces.

LUXI Gray can be used with sisal, ordinary stitched cotton and treated stitched cotton wheels. Sisal provides the most active cutting action and is particularly useful on hard materials where a standard stitched cotton wheel is not aggressive enough. Ordinary stitched cotton provides a softer contact, while treated stitched cotton offers a firmer and more active action between stitched cotton and sisal.

For a standard wheel of approximately 150 mm diameter, LUXI gives a starting working range of 2500–3000 rpm. Apply the compound sparingly to a clean wheel and work in short passes, inspecting the surface regularly. Avoid excessive pressure, prolonged contact or overloading the wheel with compound, as these can cause overheating, loss of geometry or wheel clogging.

Once the first polishing stage is complete, remove all remaining compound and removed metal from the workpiece, paying particular attention to recesses, relief, inside corners and joints. Use a separate clean wheel or tool when progressing to a finer compound to prevent contamination.

LUXI Formulation

LUXI compounds are water-based, silica-free and animal-fat-free, offering a modern alternative to traditional polishing compounds.

The silica-free formulation contains no crystalline silica, avoiding the specific respiratory hazards associated with inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust. Appropriate dust extraction and personal protective equipment should always be used during polishing, but the absence of crystalline silica is an important consideration when choosing a polishing compound.

The animal-fat-free formulation uses a water-soluble binder rather than traditional animal fats. This helps create a cleaner polishing process, with residues that are easier to remove from the workpiece, polishing wheels and equipment. The water-based formulation also helps reduce the greasy residue often associated with traditional fat-based compounds.

Together, these properties make LUXI a cleaner, modern alternative to traditional polishing compounds, combining easier cleanup and a more considered formulation with the high-performance cutting and polishing characteristics required for professional jewellery and metalworking applications.
